We don't use HR Connect at Oakland, primarily because there just isn't sufficient volume to make the ROI worth the cost. We primarily hire in the summers, so when we know who the new faculty are, we input them manually. Our IRB team currently uses the bulk upload to address the need to add students in research-active departments, since most of them will need to do a research project (as a senior capstone, for an honors thesis, or as part of the requirements for a graduate degree).
As for onboarding, we generally walk an investigator through the basics when they start working on their first proposal. We held group trainings when we were just getting Cayuse up and running, but again, since we aren't hiring hundreds of people a year who'd need it, we're finding the just-in-time approach works well for us. (It also helps that it's our culture to have the Research Office staff do most of the work in Cayuse - we tell our investigators to focus on the science and let us take care of the administratrivia - if for no other reason than that it saves us countless hours of undoing things or fixing mistakes. We're in the system all day, every day - we understand it far better than PIs will who may only interact with it once or twice a year if they don't have a funded project or need a protocol for research with human subjects, animals, or biohazards.
