Dave Harris

How do you interact with Cayuse products on a daily basis?

At Idaho State University, we us Cayuse SP along with Cayuse IRB on a daily basis for proposal preparation and oversight of human subject related projects. Cayuse SP facilitates the routing and approval of all proposals for external funding in considerably less time than it took us using hard copy routing. We have actually seen a proposal be fully routed for complete approval in as little as 90 minutes. Since the inception of Cayuse SP on our campus, we have processed nearly 2,500 proposals for external funding. As an administrator, I can quickly access information, and easily have the most up to date information when communicating with investigators or high- level administrators. The Cayuse systems helps us interact with faculty in a quick and efficient manner.

What do you like to do outside of work?
I recently got married and enjoy spending time with my new bride as well as our entire newly blended family. As a family, we enjoy boating, bbq-ing, and I also enjoy playing golf as much as possible. I’ve previously coached high school and competitive travel fastpitch softball, and enjoy seeing my children take over programs and teams I may have had a hand in creating.

What do you see as the hottest trends in research today?
It was encouraging to see how quickly the research community moved when COVID hit. From vaccines development to the 3D printing of PPE materials. Also, collaborative, interdisciplinary projects are always a hot item that promote the examination of large, complex problems and involve multiple perspectives.

What do you consider most promising in the era of big data?
Increased efficiency combined with access to practical and useful information.

How can an organization stay relevant five years from now?
Listen to our customers. Embrace change as an opportunity rather than a challenge. Always continue to find ways to improve and evolve.

What app would be hard for you to live without?
As much as I hate to admit it, my email app would be difficult to live without. I think back to the early 90’s and wonder how we ever communicated.

If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
Al Gore. Although not your standard historical figure since he is still alive, he certainly has a place in history as he created the internet. And without the internet, we would not have access to this wonderful platform called Cayuse! Ok, ok. It would actually be Abraham Lincoln. I’d like to sit down with him and get his take on the status of the world we currently live in, as opposed to the world he lived in during the early part of the 1800’s.

Thank you, Dave, for being a Cayuse Champion and sharing your thoughts!
