The Cayuse community is thrilled to shine its Champion Spotlight on @Christine Johnson, Ph.D., Associate Vice President for Research at Oklahoma State University. Keep reading below to get to know Christine!

Christine Johnson, Ph.D.

How do you interact with Cayuse products on a daily basis?
I assist faculty investigators with their access and user roles, I respond to questions from sponsored programs staff regarding processes and procedures, I run data queries and reports from Cayuse (my favorite activity!), I update the proposal and award forms when needed, and on the rare occasion when something seems awry, I attempt to troubleshoot and submit help support requests.

What do you see as the hottest trends in research today?
I would be remiss if I did not say the use, and impact of, Artificial Intelligence. The potential for AI to be used for data mining -- to synthesize what prior research studies have discovered -- could be pivotal in shaping future research questions and expediting new discoveries.

What do you consider most promising in the era of big data?
Given the volume of knowledge that has been gained regarding the human genome, environmental factors/conditions, and gene-environment interactions, I believe we will witness breakthroughs, discoveries, and new intervention strategies in areas such as precision medicine and precision nutrition.

How can an organization stay relevant five years from now?
Adapt to change, be flexible, and be receptive to doing things differently. Note: When our institution adopted Cayuse Sponsored Projects 4.0 a year ago, we had to let go of some long-held protocols and adopt new processes.

What app would be hard for you to live without?
I would say there are two apps that I enjoy and rely upon: 1. Apple News:  I love to read news stories on my digital devices, and Apple News provides access to various news from hundreds of publications; I read stories from CNN to the Wall Street Journal, and even People Magazine. I also do the Apple News+ crossword daily. 2. Deliveries, the package tracking app: I do quite a bit of online shopping, and this app helps me track my deliveries, particularly from Amazon.

What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy traveling internationally, particularly to Europe. I will be in Greece for some rest and relaxation this spring. From my international travels, I have acquired an appreciation for wine and I belong to a wine club. I also enjoy attending (and watching) college football games. My three-year-old standard poodle, Gibson, and I are currently participating in advanced obedience classes; dog agility does not seem to be our thing! And I enjoy hosting friends in my home to celebrate holidays and special occasions.

If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
I am a World War II buff, and during graduate school, I had the opportunity to read some of Eleanor Roosevelt's diaries. During the Great Depression, hundreds of people, particularly mothers struggling to care for their children, wrote to Mrs. Roosevelt seeking her direct assistance; these stories were heart breaking. I would like to ask her how she had the courage and strength to be a role model for women during that economically and politically challenging period in history. (I would also like to know what happened to Amelia Earhart!)

Thank you, Christine, for being a Cayuse Champion and sharing your thoughts!
