Job Description:
Research Program Manager
This senior level position performs grant life-cycle administration within Research Pod 2. The Pod is structured to provide a supportive environment for individuals seeking to grow into leadership roles within the research community and encourages continual professional development
Research Program Managers (RPM) are expected to choose two areas to become subject matter experts for the Pod (e.g., Foundation proposals and subrecipients, labor/effort and training). RPMs will occasionally serve as a lead to provide guidance as needed for entry and mid-level team members. Strong candidates will either have or seek to obtain a CRA certification.
The duties of a Research Program Manager (RPM) are split into two major categories of pre-award and post-award.
Pre-Award
The first category includes proposal preparation and submission in collaboration with research faculty. As an RPM, the amount, complexity and autonomy for handling proposals is set to the highest standard and the individual should be well-versed in all requisite guidelines for the submission (or be able to quickly find the relevant information).
Pre-Award Responsibilities Include:
● Reading and comprehending funding announcements
● Preparing budgets and other related documents
● Reviewing subcontracts and service agreements for completeness
● Providing review and ensuring compliance for all funder requirements
● Mastery of the submission system (GW myResearch and relevant sponsor portals)
Post-Award
Post-award research administration includes working closely with a group of faculty and overseeing their portfolios. As an RPM, the size and complexity of the portfolio should reflect the highest level of sophistication in finance management and compliance or the RPM should be a specialist providing support to the entire Pod (eg. Primary reviewer and approver, trainer, special ops floater). Meetings to strategize and reconcile award funds are expected to occur on a bimonthly cadence, and the research program manager conducts outreach to other GW stakeholders to assist in maintaining standard operational efficiencies.
Post-Award Responsibilities Include:
● High level oversight and management of sponsored research expenditures
● Review and approve as final authority for various expenses
● Fiscal compliance, budget preparation and projections
Performs other related duties as assigned, such as guiding/participating in Pod and University research related meetings/committees. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning tasks that are logically related to the position.
