    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The primary purpose of the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) is to support the research and scholarly activities of the University faculty and students.  The ORI accomplishes this goal via funding identification, proposal and budget development, post-award services, and grant writing instruction for faculty.  The Office also hosts two student research symposiums, coordinates participation and partially funds participation in external student research symposiums, funds small research projects when funding allows and guides students through the application process for fellowships and scholarships.

    This position has two strategic primary purposes.  The first purpose is to support faculty with the submission of federal and state research grant applications, namely to prepare, review, submit, monitor, and ensure compliance with funding agency regulations.  The second purpose is to assist with Duquesne's internal grants database, website updates, communications, and other technology used in the ORI.

    As a condition of employment, Duquesne University requires all new employees -full-time and part-time, including adjunct faculty-to get a COVID-19 vaccine and provide proof of their vaccination upon commencement of employment.

    New employees requesting a religious or documented medical exemption from the vaccine must complete and submit a Duquesne University exemption request form for review and approval.     DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Proposal submission to state and federal funders.

    Submits grant applications to various federal and state agencies (e.g., the NSF, NIH, Dept of Ed, DoJ, DoD, PA Dept of Health, PA Dept of Ed, etc.)

    Facilitates communications with PIs for securing internal review and approval prior to submission.

    Engages in outreach to federal agencies as indicated.

    Assists with subcontracts.

    Engages with post-award accounting as needed.

    Electronic Research Administration, Database and reporting

    Mentor Database:

    Assumes primary responsibility for oversight of the database.

    Interfaces internally with CTS (Computing and Technology Services) to ensure proper import of data from Banner.

    Interfaces with the support staff at Mentor.

    Pulls data for the ORI annual report and other reports as needed.

    Develops and maintain a procedures manual.

    Maintains quality assurance.

    Monitors and submits required federal and state grant progress reports.

    Identifies faculty meeting criteria for inclusion in the annual President's Prestigious Scholars Reception.

    Communications & Events.

    Maintains website updates and explore options for promoting research via social media.

    Organizes shared files and directories within the office.

    Ensures optimal use of subscriptions and software used in the ORI.

    Distributes biweekly funding opportunity announcement.

    Events: 

    Works with the Director of Student Research Engagement to facilitate the annual Undergraduate and Graduate Research Symposia (URSS/GRS)

    Helps to ensure ORI presence at various DU Open Houses and FAST events

    Works with other Grant Officers to ensure timely submission of grants and reports.

    Works with other Grant Officers to apply for certification and maintain recertification of University registrations required to apply for and to receive federal grants.

    Assists with other grant-related tasks as needed.

    Assists with the annual Undergraduate and Graduate Research Symposia (URSS/GRS).

    Provide assistance and/or back-up for the Director of Business and Grants Administration and other Grants Officers.

    Other duties as assigned.



    REQUIREMENTS:

    Minimum qualifications:

    Bachelor's degree in Communications or Business from an accredited institution.

    1-3 years of work-related experience.

    The ideal candidate will have experience working in higher education, specifically research administration.

    Preferred qualifications:

    Master's degree in Business Administration, Management or Education from an accredited institution.

    The ideal candidate will have experience working in higher education, specifically research administration.

    Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

    Three years of experience in research administration, higher education, or higher education administration.

    Strong writing and communication skills.

    Highly developed problem-solving skills, adaptability, and ability to work under short deadlines and in stressful situations.

    Highly collaborative nature.

    The candidate must have an intimate understanding of rules and regulations governing federal applications and awards.

    The candidate should have systems or database experience, or a strong desire to learn such skill sets.
