As we work on defining the species dictionary in Animal Oversight, we're struggling with how to balance reporting needs with the researcher experience. For example, for USDA covered species we want to be able to report on the exact species in a protocol, but if we ask for each individual species to be added in the protocol it will be a lot of work and frustration for a researcher who is working with a bunch of species and is handling them all in the same way to have to fill out the same information on the species sub-pages repeatedly. Alternatively if we set up the "species" in AO as more general categories like "snakes" we lose the ability to report on the exact species.

How have others dealt with this?

    Hello Jennie,

While we don't have this issue (we're only working with mice and rats), perhaps you could use the Species to lump class or family of animals, then use the Strain Info section to refine it for actual species?  If you additionally have the census module, this could enable you to at least run reports on counts of the different species ("strains") used.  If you don't have the census module, you may need to team with procurement staff (or PIs, if the animals aren't purchased) to get more specific details.

    Cheers,
    Cheryl
