The director also has delegated authority to sign proposals and execute agreements related to sponsored research, instruction, and public service.

Directly reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research, the Director of Sponsored Programs Administration serves as the Institutional Official, with signature authority, for all grants and contracts submitted to federal and non-federal extramural funding agencies, assuring they are compliant with all relevant federal, state, and institutional policies and regulations. In addition, the director communicates regularly with other University of Nebraska officials, including the directors of other pre-award offices, the Provost and Associate Provost, the director of the NU Foundation, and multiple members of the Office of Legal Counsel, as well as members of the technology transfer group, UNeMed. The Director will develop templates as needed for minimum or standard language required in contracts or other agreements with other entities or institutions based on existing regulations, and will revise these as new information or new regulations arise.

Other duties of the Director include: working collaboratively with other campus leaders and research program leaders, informing them of changes in regulations or procedures that could impact grant and contract submissions, and solving problems as they arise; providing regular and accurate reports of research awards as required, including those requested or required by the Board of Regents; meeting regularly with other program leaders within the Vice Chancellor for Research Office to keep them abreast of, anticipate, and solve problems as they arise, as well as announce strategic initiatives that will impact the Sponsored Programs Administration office.

The Director of Sponsored Programs Administration also works regularly with the director of Sponsored Programs Accounting to assure speedy and accurate hand-offs of funded projects, as well as with program officers and other NIH officials to respond to any questions they have, or that faculty or staff might have, about funded or pending sponsored programs.
