    The Office of Sponsored Projects, Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC) seeks an experienced, results-oriented Grants and Contracts Financial Analyst to provide technical assistance on all aspects of post award sponsored projects management.  This full-time position will support a diverse portfolio of government and private funding awards for research programs and projects. The incumbent will serves as primary financial contact for investigators and fund managers, and acts as liaison to sponsors regarding grants and contracts financial matters.  NOTE: this position is eligible for hybrid or remote telework schedule, and is NOT a federal position.


    Salary range: depending on qualifications and experience:   $61,947 – $97,430


    Job Duties:

    • Provides excellent customer service when interacting with investigators, fund managers, and other central offices.


    • Monitors award compliance with Smithsonian policies, sponsor terms and conditions, guidelines and applicable federal rules and regulations throughout the life of the award.


    • Performs financial management functions, including billing sponsors in accordance with award invoicing terms, preparing letter of credit draw downs, applying check payments and wire transfer of funds accurately to outstanding accounts receivable, managing accounts receivable (including researching and resolving any credits balances), and timely resolution of unidentified payments from sponsor.
    • Monitors financial report due dates, prepares, and submits interim and final financial reports.


    • Monitors expenditures, grant budgets, spending rates, and end dates of sponsored projects.


    • Assists with training of Smithsonian staff on post award management and compliance.


    Qualification Requirements:

    Preferred experience would best be gained from working on financial management of federal, state, local, international government or private foundation grants and contracts, at a university, research institute, hospital, or non-profit organization.  We seek candidates with excellent Microsoft Excel skills, strong oral and written communication skills, detailed-oriented and able to work independently, and strong organizational, coordination and prioritization skills.


    In addition, the following are preferred qualifications:


    • 1 to 3 years of accounting experience with monitoring financial aspects of grants and contracts
    • a bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
    • Knowledge of Uniform Administrative Requirements, cost principles, and Audit requirements for Federal Awards (2 CFR 200)


    • Experience with the following is preferred but not required:
      • indirect cost proposals
      • auditing
      • Oracle software (e.g., PeopleSoft ERP)
      • Governing regulations (e.g., Federal Acquisition Regulations)
      • Attainment of Certified Financial Research Administrator (CFRA) or Certified Research Administrator (CRA).
