    Description –

The University of Pittsburgh's Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology is seeking a Laboratory Technician. Our lab is interested in the study of complex digestive system disorders, with a concentration on pancreatic and liver diseases. We evaluate bio-markers and risk factors found in the blood or other samples from human subjects including proteins, metabolites, DNA, RNA, and other substances. Specimens will be collected, processed, and frozen within a specific time limit given in the established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Samples will be stored for short or long-term use in an organized manner. Urine and other specimens may also be collected, processed, and stored according to the lab's SOP as needed. Eventually, exploratory and confirmatory experiments will need to be performed in-vitro by means of cell culture systems. The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for specimen processing and storage, maintaining various laboratory logs, transferring of samples and supplies between sites, monitoring of freezers, and DNA, RNA, and protein extraction. This individual will need to work with multiple research coordinators who consent the patients and obtain the specimens. The individual will also need to be well organized and capable of working in a sometimes fast-paced environment. There will be some QC and technical development of new and existing processes. Frequent travel on the UPMC shuttle or Port Authority buses between the main lab in Shadyside and hospitals, satellite lab, and GPCL in Oakland will be necessary. It will be necessary to perform sophisticated data searches on the worldwide web and compile, organize, store, and analyze laboratory data. Supervision will be provided by the laboratory manager.

    Qualifications –

Degree in biological sciences or chemistry field preferred. Bachelor's degree preferred. Equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for degree requirement.
