    We are seeking a Sponsored Research Specialist to join our Earth & Space Research Administration (ESRA) team.  Reporting to the Financial Manager and working closely with UMBC staff, faculty, student and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) sponsors, the incumbent will be responsible for financial management and reporting of research awards, including multi-institutional cooperative agreements, grants and contracts – monitoring all financial aspects of their assigned portfolio from pre-award through closeout.

    Specific duties include:

    • Assisting faculty members in the submission of proposals, including preparation of the proposal budget
    • Overseeing UMBC proposal routing and submission via the specified method
    • Routine reconciliation and analysis of allocated award expenditures, including effort, to ensure accuracy, allowability, and compliance with Federal, State, UMBC, and sponsor requirements
    • Meeting with PI faculty members regularly to review funding portfolio, effort, and financial status
    • Preparing required monthly financial reports
    • Other duties as assigned


    This position has optional locations at the UMBC Campus in Baltimore, MD and NASA GSFC in Greenbelt, MD.  Hybrid-telework schedule options may be available.

    Requires a Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Business, Management, Accounting or Finance. Must be proficient in Gmail, MS Excel and Word.

    Preferred qualifications include:

    • Sponsored research administration experience strongly preferred
    • Knowledge of federal regulations relating to grants and/or contracts
    • Higher education experience desired
    • Experience with Google forms and database software
    • PeopleSoft and/or Kuali experience
    • Keen attention to detail
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Robust analytical skills
    • Ability to multi-task and appropriately prioritize duties
    • Excellent communication and customer service skills


    This is a grant-funded position and employment is contingent upon award renewal. Starting salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time position and includes full university benefits. Note: A background check will be required.
