    Job Description:

    The Office of Industry Engagement (OIE) negotiates all agreements related to sponsored research that are funded solely by private industry with the objective of optimizing industry access to UT Austin's research expertise to benefit society. OIE offers specialized contractual expertise, with support from the researcher and the Office of Technology Commercialization, to develop appropriate intellectual property models for sponsored research. OIE collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to promote successful research collaborations at UT Austin.

    The Industry Contracts Coordinator's purpose is to provide service and support to faculty, staff, and external partners in the development, drafting, review and negotiation of proposals, contracts and subcontracts, including related daily administrative tasks. This position is responsible for overseeing the negotiation and management of a high volume of funded and non-funded agreements, including:
    • Sponsored Research Agreements
    • Industrial Affiliate Programs
    • Master Research Agreements
    • Research Participation Agreements
    • Data Use Licenses
    • Non-Disclosure Agreements
    • Material Transfer Agreements

    Job Details:

    Responsibilities

    • Prepare, draft, review and negotiate terms of various agreements. Interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures, and federal and state laws related to sponsored research. Review and administratively prepare documentation for proposals, new awards, amendments, and modifications. Review subcontract awards for applicable flow down clauses and coordinate with subcontractors regarding terms.

    • Outline risks associated with clauses and other considerations that may be relevant for projects. Review awards for financial and compliance risks and outline risks to Associate Director.  Be available as needed to and work with sponsors, faculty, staff and other colleagues to prepare approaches and responses to contract, project or proposal issues for submission to industry sponsors. Proficiently research contractual issues.

    • Meet with faculty, staff and representatives of sponsoring organizations to facilitate discussions, conduct outreach and promote and strengthen business relationships. Follow-up on negotiations of awards and modifications when timely responses have not been received from faculty or sponsors. Follow established processes to ensure professional, timely and accurate administration and communications, including documentation for contracts and proposals, and database records.

    • Promptly respond to, and resolve in a timely manner, inquiries and requests for information or assistance.  Address needs and/or interests of sponsors and offer more detailed reference information to faculty and staff members initiating industry contracts and other agreements. Enter and maintain data related to award and modification negotiations into research management databases in a timely fashion.

    • Contribute input on strategic initiatives, such as optimization of processes and procedures.

    • Other related functions as assigned.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience in the negotiation of complex, non-procurement contracts involving intellectual property, including drafting language and subsequent negotiations

    • Working knowledge of intellectual property types and rights

    • Ability to work independently

    • High degree of attention to detail

    • Capacity to execute in a fast-paced environment with extensive administrative requirements, high volume of transactions at times, and some deadline-driven deliverables

    • Service mentality focused on meeting the needs of the internal and external stakeholders

    • Proficiency in analysis, interpretation and evaluation of complex contractual terminology

    • Extensive experience with the use of Microsoft Word software

    • Works well with others and contributes positively to the office environment

    Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Graduate degree, or bachelor degree with certification in contract management or university administration

    • More than seven years of experience working in a University research administration environment

    • More than seven years of experience developing and negotiating intellectual property terms appropriate to industry sponsored research projects

    • In-depth knowledge of intellectual property types and rights

    • Knowledge of research compliance issues including export compliance, human subject research, and animal research

    • Knowledge of both Texas and federal contract regulations including UBIT, Private Business Use, and TPIA

    • Experience working in an industry setting negotiating sponsored research projects with large U.S. universities

    Salary Range

    $65,000 + depending on qualifications

    • Remote working due to COVID-19 with return to campus likely in fall 2021

    • Some driving to attend meetings at campus locations
