    Job Summary

    Partnering with the Director of the Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR), the Associate Director for Research Administration and Operations will oversee grant activity for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS), as well as interdisciplinary and intercollegiate ISSR scholars. The Associate Director manages the day-to-day operations of the Institute and provides leadership and supervision to the ISSR administrative and operational staff. 

     

    Essential Functions 

    • Manage the day-to-day operations of ISSR including personnel, finance, events, communications, facilities management and other functions that support the success of ISSR. Supervise, train and support staff to create a positive and productive work environment. In collaboration with the Director, determine staff needs and hiring selection. 
    • Manage grant development and pre-award services. Act as liaison between granting agency and Principal Investigator. Track grant submissions for renewals and new awards. Collect, extract and maintain ISSR grant data and utilize data to create comprehensive reports for internal and external audiences. Oversee creation of the annual report to the Deans, Provost and VCRE.
    • Manage and coordinate grant proposal writing among social science faculty ensuring compliance with university policies and sponsor requirements. Advise and train relevant SBS departmental staff in proposal development and grant management support.
    • Develop budgets for, and edit complex grant proposals to maximize award success. Maintain comprehensive knowledge of indirect cost and fringe rates for all types of awards. Follow sponsor guidelines and submit grant applications, adhering to all deadlines mandated by the granting agency and the Office of Pre-Award Services (OPAS) deadlines.
    • Lead workshops on proposal submission practices, including budgeting and compliance with sponsor guidelines, imparting skills to enable faculty to build successful social science research grant proposals. Support the ISSR Scholars and Funding Fridays Programs by working with Program facilitators and participants.

     

    Other Functions

    • Continually broaden knowledge base by participating in training sessions and other educational opportunities to support and improve research administration.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

     

    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

    • Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience in research administration.
    • Excellent organizational skills and acute attention to detail.
    • Knowledge of pre and post award grant processes with experience in overseeing submission of successful grant proposals.
    • Experience developing and managing budgets for grants and contracts.
    • Excellent writing and editing skills, particularly of scholarly work.
    • Superlative communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop and maintain productive relationships.
    • Ability to coordinate and work well with faculty and staff from a variety of disciplines and constituents outside the University.
    • Ability to ensure compliance with rules, policies, and procedures governing assigned activities.
    • Excellent computer skills including MS Office and the ability to quickly learn grant related systems.
    • Proficiency with online application protocols required by funding agencies.

     

    Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

    • Knowledge of UMass systems.

    • Typical office environment.

     

    Additional Details

    • May supervise graduate and undergraduate assistants.  

     

    Work Schedule

    • Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm (37.5 hours/week).
    • This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee's work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
