Cayuse Champion Spotlight: Jennifer Hanlon Patterson

The Cayuse community is thrilled to shine its Champion Spotlight on @Jennifer Hanlon-Patterson, Director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at Stephen F. Austin State University. Keep reading below to get to know Jennifer better.

How do you interact with Cayuse products on a daily basis?
We launched Cayuse SP in September 2022 and are currently wrapping up Fund Manager implementation. I work with SP daily – either assisting faculty/staff as they complete their proposals, setting up awards, or updating forms. The ability to have everything in one place and online has made the grants process more transparent to the campus community.

What do you like to do outside of work?
I’m currently working on another degree, so school takes up most of my free time. When there isn’t a deadline looming, I enjoy life with my husband and my two bonus kids as we patiently await the release of a new Marvel movie. I also love to travel, and we are currently working our way through the best non-chain steakhouses in Texas.

What do you see as the hottest trends in research today?
Technology in general and AI specifically - the available tech tools are never ending. It’s important for research administrators to advocate for our institutions to adopt technology to empower faculty and staff in their research endeavors.

What do you consider most promising in the era of big data?
The ability to have real-time data and globally share that data will greatly enhance research and daily operations. Of course, we also need the staffing resources to have the time to analyze and use the data effectively.

How can an organization stay relevant five years from now?
Invest in the number one resource – the employees. Invest in training and technology so employees remain current in their fields and have the tools they need. Encourage innovation. Provide incentives to encourage longevity (and these do not have to be monetary).

What app would be hard for you to live without?
Google Maps! My family loves to take road trips, so not only does this app keep us from getting lost, we find the best recommendations for food and sights to see.

If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
I would wish to visit any country with Anthony Bourdain. His love for food, culture, and people was contagious. He had a special ability to elevate a meal to be more about the people than the food. Bourdain always advocated that the journey was more important than the destination, and this belief has always resonated with me.

Thank you, Jennifer, for being a Cayuse Champion and sharing your thoughts!
