    Western Washington University (WWU) is a Primarily Undergraduate Serving Institution (PUI) and Emerging Research Institution seeking a Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) Administrator to support our growing research community. The HRPP Administrator serves as WWU's regulatory expert who is responsible for managing the protocol review process and providing regulatory and ethical training and guidance for the campus community. The ideal candidate is a collaborative individual with strong interpersonal skills who is comfortable with leveraging technology to manage approximately 200 applications per year. This position is eligible for a fully remote work arrangement; however, WWU currently requires employees to reside in WA State. The hiring range is $76,401-$87,861; through longevity the position tops at $99,321/year.

    About the Position 

    Western Washington University is a Primarily Undergraduate Serving Institution (PUI) seeking a knowledgeable, experienced, and collaborative individual to help develop and lead its Human Subjects Research Protection Program. As the WWU Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) Administrator you will be responsible for managing the protocol review process to independently determine whether the components of the proposed research are in compliance with federal, state and university policies, rules and regulations. Working collaboratively with faculty, other compliance officers at WWU, and the Vice Provost for Research, the position serves as the institution's regulatory expert and is responsible for developing and leading Western's human research protections program. WWU's IRB considers approximately 150-200 applications per year, primarily in social-behavioral-education research. The HRPP Administrator provided regulatory, ethical and administrative guidance through developing and delivering training for staff, IRB members and the WWU research community. The position is eligible for a fully remote work arrangement. WWU employees must reside in WA State.

    WWU's HRPP Administrator will:

    • Develop and apply guidance to facilitate the processing of human subjects research protocols to ensure compliance with WWU, federal, and state policies, rules, and regulations;
    • Independently advise investigators in the interpretation of applicable policies, procedures, guidelines, federal regulations, and other compliance related requirements;
    • Provide technical assistance to investigators throughout the submission process;
    • Perform review of complex research protocols, including identifying problems and issues in the submission application and contacting the investigators to request additional materials in order to satisfy review requirements;
    • Serve as the designated reviewer for studies that involve no greater than minimal risk to participants and qualify for exempt status and not human subjects research applications;
    • Consult individuals with applicable expertise as part of the review process when needed;
    • Plan and coordinate IRB review and follow-up activities including documentation of technical deliberations, regulatory findings, and board actions;
    • Partner with colleges and departments to provides regulatory and compliance education and training to faculty, staff, students, and committee members.
    • Educate the campus research community on relevant and emerging regulations and related risk management issues;
    • Maintain records in alignment with federal, state, and university requirements and standards;
    • Ensure that regulatory determinations are appropriately documented in committee meeting minutes and approval letter;
    • Assist in responding to alleged violations of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures;
    • Collaborate with the Research and Sponsored Programs Office Director on review and analysis of business processes to monitor and prioritize workflow, and to set team-level targets;
    • Attend educational meetings, conferences, and training to remain abreast of laws and regulations impacting research compliance

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree
    • Demonstrated IRB experience or relevant research regulatory experience/exposure.
    • Strong communication and organization skills
    • Ability to work independently and take initiative

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's Degree
    • Three or more years of relevant IRB experience
    • Certified IRB Professional (CIP)

    Salary

    Hiring range is $76,401 - $87,861/year; through longevity position tops at $99,321/year.
