At today's webinar, we celebrated Cayuse's 30th anniversary and some staff members shared what motivates them to stay in the field of research administration. Now I want to put the question to you all: How long have you been in research administration and what keeps you there? Looking forward to seeing the answers!

I've been in research administration, formally as an IRB Administrator, since 2012.

I've remained in this position for 12 years because I truly enjoy the work! Ensuring fairness and equity for the research participants we partner with is instrumental.

And as a subject matter expert in human subject research protection regulations, which inform all of our work, having the opportunity to engage with federal agencies in updating and implementing the 2018 Revised Common Rule was an exciting process.

I've been in research administration as a Research Compliance Specialist for my institution since 2008. I have remained in this position, because I have a passion for the work itself. Everyday is truly a learning experience...one that I do not take for granted. I have been a Certified IRB Professional since 2016. Achieving the position of subject matter expert when it pertains to IRB regulations has been one of the best experiences to date.

I entered research administration (IACUC) in 2018 after working at my previous institution for 12 years as a research specialist using animal subjects in research.  Being involved in research and being subject to the IACUC's oversight and practices made me aware of the various challenges that our researchers face and so when I was asked to join the IACUC as a post-approval monitoring liason, I envisioned promoting IACUC oversight and compliance in a way that also enabled our researchers to achieve their goals and projects as well.

Over the last 5 years I have had the opportunity to learn more about the regulatory requirements (obtaining my CPIA) and move into a position directing an office that had never had an IACUC Director before and so I am now in a position where I feel that I can build the vision I had when I first entered research admin.  Since change (especially at a public institution) is slow and requires a lot of planning and development over time, I plan to remain in the field to see things through.

    Hi Simon!

I've been in Research Administration for 5 years now, in Preaward. The primary reason that I love this job are the PIs, the faculty; they are some of the most brilliant minds and interesting characters. I enjoy even getting to be a small part of the genuinely groundbreaking research they are doing.

However I can help make their jobs easier and make obtaining funding for their research less daunting leveraging tools like Cayuse makes me feel like I'm helping them make a difference in the world. I'm eager to see how Cayuse will continue to evolve to help us help our PIs and our PIs to help themselves.

I've been in research administration for 17 years. I started off in Biomedical research and have been reviewing Social Behavioral research since 2016. I stay in this field because I love learning new information regarding research. I really don't ever have a boring day at work.

I have been in research administration since 2008. (I was a non-scientist member of the IRB for 7 years before becoming staff).

Like others have posted, I truly enjoy the work and its mission/purpose.

My position has evolved to teaching responsible conduct of research and "how to IRB" modules in some of our degree programs, as 95% of our submissions come from graduate-student PIs. I enjoy the teaching part of my job very much and humanizing the IRB process for them.

I have always been a remote worker; the autonomy and flexibility also keep me doing this work.
