I have been in research administration since 2008. (I was a non-scientist member of the IRB for 7 years before becoming staff).
Like others have posted, I truly enjoy the work and its mission/purpose.
My position has evolved to teaching responsible conduct of research and "how to IRB" modules in some of our degree programs, as 95% of our submissions come from graduate-student PIs. I enjoy the teaching part of my job very much and humanizing the IRB process for them.
I have always been a remote worker; the autonomy and flexibility also keep me doing this work.

Subject: How long have you been in research administration? What keeps you in research?
At today's webinar, we celebrated Cayuse's 30th anniversary and some staff members shared what motivates them to stay in the field of research administration. Now I want to put the question to you all: How long have you been in research administration and what keeps you there? Looking forward to seeing the answers!
