  • 1.  Working with CIRB

Hello!  I am a newer IRB administrator for a small college IRB that is associated with a hospital.  The hospital occasionally uses our IRB to review studies.  We have a new research nurse who is working for a cancer center, and she is working on becoming associated with the NCI CIRB.  I don't know enough about the role our IRB would play, but I'm starting to work through this process with her.  I am completely admitting to ignorance here, but have been trying to read up on sIRBs.  I am signed up for the IRB Administrator Mini Boot Camp that starts next week.  I am starting to work through the signatory worksheet with her.  My question to the community is if anyone has experience with this process and would be willing to answer a few questions for me?  You have my thanks in advance.

I am happy to help in any way also.  At my former institution, one of my responsibilities was collaborative agreements however we were not involved with many true multi site projects. With you being the relying institution, you will mostly follow the lead of the IRB of record. Your institution is still responsible for your PI so you will want to ensure your PI is aware that they need to abide by the policies of the other IRB, that they know how to communicate any reportable events to your office and to CIRB, etc.  I made a checklist for PIs for both situations of us being the relying and the reviewing IRB so that they knew all of their responsibilities and would then add to it anything that was stipulated in the reliance agreement or by the policies of the reviewing IRB. We also required our PI to have a submission in our system for tracking purposes and keeping up with approval letters and updated study documents and such.  I'm not sure if any of this is helpful but just wanted to offer up a little view of sIRB in a SEBR heavy program.  Please send/post your questions and I'm sure we can all pitch in and get you there.

Oh and btw, the IRB Administrator Boot Camp is very beneficial.  You should get a lot out of it.  The ladies that lead it when I attended (many years ago) were very thorough and helpful with all of my newby questions.  It was quite comprehensive and touched on pretty much all of the aspects of IRB Administrator.

    Angela,
Thanks for your response.  What you included about the process is in line with other information I've received, so I feel like I'm moving in the right direction.  Interestingly enough, I'm attending the PRIM&R boot camp starting tomorrow.  I completed the common rule training earlier this summer and it was extremely helpful.  Thanks again for your help!
