Student travel happens just like faculty travel here. We put registration, airfare, and hotel on the P-card in advance of the travel. Other things, like parking or ground transportation, they have to pay and we reimburse them through university travel. If these incidental costs are too burdensome for a grad student (been there, done that!), there is a mechanism for an advance.
Student salary happens through the Grad School, but hits the grant fund rather than the Grad School's general ledger. We do that through a change of status, a process largely invisible to the student.
Does that help?

Hello Community!
Wondering how other institutions pay students on grants, particularly for travel (conferences, mileage, etc.) and research study participation. Thank you!
