Hi, all!  How does your institution decide what percentage to escalate salaries in the out years?  Do you post what that increase is?  If your institution gets a general pay increase, do you automatically re-evaluate that percentage?  Who makes that decision and how do they arrive at it?  We have not used Cayuse 424.  Is it fairly easy to put in escalations?

    Hi Audrey,

We escalate salaries at 3% per year based on average historical data.  This has worked well and is not questioned by most sponsors.  We populate this increase in our budget planning templates and post it on our website.

Similarly, we have calculated fringe increases at 5 %, largely reflective of insurance increases.  That number is under discussion, and we will look back at actual increases as/if it is adjusted.

This work is a collaborative effort between the pre and post-award administration offices.  We will garner approval from the VPR before affecting a change.  I can only recall one instance when we have come up short with these figures but would encourage you to look at trends within your institution.

    Cheers,
    Charna

    Hi Audrey,

We've used a 3% increment for years (except with NIH, as most institutes won't fund it).  I believe in the distant past it may have been tied to inflation at the time... you know, the good 'ole days!  :-)

The implementation in 424 is really easy, and easy to change.  Cayuse424 also allows for budget copying (replication) without escalation, and lets you decide which line items to have escalation apply.

I'd like to hear people chime in on the new (4.0) budget builder and its capabilities along those lines.

    Cheers,

Lisa, thanks so much!  I'd also be curious about version 4.0 and its budget-building capabilities, specifically as it relates to escalations.  -- alwf
