    Hi, all...

Another compliance area question for you...

How would you handle a situation where an IACUC committee member needs to take a refresher course, but that committee member has had eye surgery and will not be able to complete training before the current expiration date?

The person has been on the committee at least three years, so the person is trained, but needs to update.

    Thanks!

    Pam

    Hi Pam,

I would allow them to take the refresher when they are able to given the circumstances. Unless your institutional policy on IACUC member training states specific methods and timelines, the regs are silent on them and only require members to be "qualified" and that they are provided opportunities to understand their role. Additionally, and again unless specifics are stated in institutional policies, the natural continuing education surrounding committee membership is often viewed as training. Please feel free to connect with me via email  (lindsay.andrews@cayuse.com) should you have any additional questions.

    Pam,

I concur with Lindsay.  The three-year "rule" is your institutional mandate.  Many institutions have a one-and-done rule regarding formalized member training.  It is reasonable to be flexible on this.  No doubt the member will "see" to it to get the training done.  :)

Thanks. Lindsay.  I appreciate the response.

I had already told the chair I was less concerned since this is a veteran committee member, and advised him to just document the reason and have her take the training as soon as she is able, but told him I would ask around as well.

    This is helpful!

Well, this is interesting.  Surely CITI training has accessible materials, but I have never verified that.  Yinkies.  My bad.
