    The Sponsored Program Officer (SPO) position serves as the institutional business official and central administrative point of contact for faculty principal investigators (PIs) and department/college administrators on pre- and post-award management of externally funded grants and contracts from federal, for-profit, non-profit, and local agency sponsors.

    Following a focused training period, the individual in this role will be assigned a constituency within their first 4-6 weeks on the job. This position manages the preparation and submission of proposals to funding agencies, providing administrative and budgetary approvals and serving as institutional signature authority. Responsibilities also include negotiating agreements that protect the interests of The Ohio State University and its faculty as well as providing institutional approval on routine contractual matters.

    The SPO position is responsible for central administrative and financial oversight of sponsored projects within their constituency. This includes coordinating the fiscal, purchasing, and reporting support needed for the successful management of their projects. This position interprets and independently communicates sponsor guidelines, University policy and procedures, state and federal law, and industry best practices to Principal Investigators (PIs) and department/college administrators to ensure compliance with sponsor and University policies.

    Required Experience: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least one year of experience in a professional capacity; At least one year of customer service and problem-solving experience; Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and the Internet.

    Required Essential Skills and Competencies: Be comfortable with being flexible and adaptable while performing in a high volume and deadline driven environment. Review and negotiate awards/contracts consistent with University preferred positions. Create or review budgets using Excel spreadsheets as a tool. Capable of multi-tasking and problem-solving; strong analytical skills. Time management ability, follow-through, organizational skills, and attention to detail. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Understand the importance and value in providing exceptional customer service to all stakeholders. Balance working autonomously as well as within a team. Enjoy working in a culture that promotes work/life balance, peer collaboration, autonomy, and supportive leadership.  

    Desired Experience: At least one year of experience and knowledge of federal or private agency sponsors, contract/grant regulations, procurement, and budgeting, accounting and financial management. Experience with electronic research tools and systems.
