  • 1.  Pain Categories for non-USDA-regulated species

    Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone has implemented a separate pain category for non-USDA-regulated rats and mice in Cayuse Animal Care.
And more specifically, if they switched from regular USDA pain categories A-E to this separate category.
We are hoping to do this, and I am just thinking about the logistics of moving the animals on approved protocols.

If anyone has done this, I would love to hear how that went.

    Thanks in advnce.

    Hi Lisa,
At UTMB we added a pain category "X" for non-USDA animals. It required extra coding by ESirius (now Cayuse) for the communication to occur between InfoEd (Protocol program in use by IACUC) and Cayuse. We have been very pleased with the results.

    Thank you

Thank you - yes, we are going to implement pain level "X" too.

    Greetings To  All,

Here at UCLA we use "N" for our Non-USDA Mice and Rats.

We use 'X' for our non-USDA pain category.   We implemented that at the beginning when we were transferring our paper system to Cayuse and it has worked well for us.   Still a letter of the alphabet so researchers adapted easily to it and it's visually easy to recognize.
