Give your input: Anonymous posting in the Connect Community

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to run an idea by you all to get your input. You can respond here or email me directly (simon.helton@cayuse.com) if you prefer to give feedback privately.

Something I've noticed recently is a handful of folks asking me to post questions in the Connect Community on their behalf because they don't want their name or institution attached to the question. Sometimes this can just be people who want to keep a low profile, other times because they're embarrassed about a question that they feel like they "should" know.

Our community software gives us the option to allow people to post anonymously. What would you think about trying out allowing anonymous posting?

    A few things to mention:

    • People would still have to register using their real names and a work email before posting.
    • Cayuse staff would still be able to see the names of people posting, even if anonymous.
    • Because of the two above factors, I don't anticipate we'd see any increase in spam or poor behavior.

So what do you all think? Should we do a trial run of allowing anonymous posting and see if it's helpful or is it more important to always know who you're talking to?

    Simon

Hi, Simon!  I think it's worth a try to see how it goes.  I'm glad to know that the anonymous emails can still be seen by folks at Cayuse so we won't be getting a lot of spam or poor behavior.    Of course, I'd like to hear from others who might agree or disagree.  I think knowing who you're talking to helps provide context, but I do understand wanting to ask a question anonymously.  How more non-commital can I be?!

I agree, the option for allowing anonymous posting would be a nice feature to offer. Other forums I belong to allow this as well, with the same caveat that the community admin will have the ability to know the source. I think this helps to ensure that the postings are not spam and just people who feel more comfortable not attaching their name/institution to certain topics.

I agree, Audrey, and I'll go further with a wish:  I'd hope the ability to post anonymously (while still moderated by Cayuse) would encourage more people to bring up interesting topics.

I feel it's certainly worth a trial period with re-evaluation and discussion after it's implemented for a quarter.

Perhaps to get at the context question, could the form for an anonymous post require or encourage the person to indicate the size of institution or something else to put their particular post in context?

    cheers,
    -Lisa

I wouldn't have any issue with people posting anonymously.   AALAS forums allow for that currently and I've definitely not seen any spam or inappropriate behavior as a result of that.   Far better for people to be able to ask their questions than struggle!

    Hello Simon,
I think posting anonymously would be a great idea!  Everyone knows that we all have questions, but we don't want everyone to know that we don't know the answers.  Also, this may generate more sharing of information that would be great for all in the Connect Community.

    Hi, Simon!

Thanks for your suggestion, and sharing other user questions on this site.

I see no harm (IRB pun intended) in having the option to post anonymously.

As a new Cayuse user, I'm learning so much and find this Community a safe, collegial space of support.

    Appreciate,
    Dawn

Thanks everyone for the input! Based on the responses here and several private messages in support of the idea, we're going to give this a trial run and see if it's useful to folks.

To start a new discussion thread anonymously, just start a discussion as usual and you'll see a check box to make it anonymous:

You can also reply to discussions anonymously:

I'll also reply to this anonymously so you can see what it looks like.

Thanks again, everyone, and I hope you all try this out!

Will the anonymous icon take gender into account?  LOL
