I realize I am sending this at the end of the day on a Friday, so I don't expect immediate answers.  And it's definitely not an emergency!

I am wondering what project categories you use in your reports.  I've looked at other institutions, and we seem to have quite the variety, beyond the standards like Research, Clinical Trials, Equipment, etc.

I keep thinking about updating ours to meet current practices, but of course know that is subjective.

    Hi Pam,

Just so I'm not assuming (because I know what happens when I do that) are you asking about project categories in Sponsored Projects? Thanks!

Thanks, Simon, and yes, I am referring to sponsored project categories, like research (sometimes broken down into basic research and applied research), clinical trials. Educational projects, service projects, etc.

I've asked the question in the past elsewhere, but as we work on reports again, I thought it would be good to check in with people again and see if anyone has a fresh perspective.

Thanks, Terri.  It looks like they have not changed since I have been there.

And Augusta, yes, those are fairly similar to some I've used elsewhere, so that helps!

And to clarify a bit more, I'm seeing some creativity with our 'Other' category.  While we ask for additional info (to see if there may be a better fit in another category), we're seeing some pretty detailed 'types.'  I could imagine everyone thinking that their project/activity is unique and doesn't fit in any categories...

Hmm...I'm not sure I have much to offer.  In fact, after reading some other comments I may need to reconsider what we do.  We have Research, Scholarship, Training, and Other.

We do pretty much as you do.  What I would LIKE to do is find a way to characterize engagement activities (which often but not always require a different F&A rate, for us) and artistry endeavors.  We treat artistry as research - because that's the arts faculty members' non-teaching intellectual work.  That works ok, but it doesn't capture the breadth that is sponsored activity.

We call them Activity Types and they correspond to Activity Codes in our financial system. We use Instruction, Public Service, Academic Support, Institutional Support, Basic Research and Applied Research. Within our Administration Policy we keep definitions and examples of each so we assign them consistently.

    Hi Pam,

This is a great question. I am as curious as you to see what other institutions do. Currently, we look more at funding sources federal vs non-federal but we do track what type of research we are funding for i.e. applied research, basic research, fellowship, and training.

    Hi Pam,

Following are our project instrument types:

    Grant
    Fellowship
    Contract
    Incoming Subgrant
    Incoming Subcontract
    Cooperative Agreement
Multicomponent   <--this captures program projects and the like that have multiple proposals in a given competitive project segment
    Industry-Sponsored Research Agreement
    Effort Only
    Clinical Trial

As we are a small and specialized institution the size of a university department, our needs are few.  :-)

    cheers,

We call them Activity codes and they also correspond to the codes in our financial system. We use: We will be changing Public Service to "Other Sponsored Activity" to better reflect that category.
