What do you like to do outside of work?

My home is within a five minute walk to the ocean. The ocean is my happy place.  I do a fair amount of walking along the ocean shore during the year.  When the weather is warm, the possibilities and activities at the shore are endless.

My newest passion is watching with awe, wonder and joy my three granddaughters, Addison, Aubrey and Ayla.  My little toddlers are the loves of my life.

What do you see as the hottest trends in research today?

I am not sure I would call it a trend but I have been paying close attention to the heightened awareness and increased regulations regarding outside influence in academia, both foreign and domestic.  These are significant issues that need to be balanced while supporting our core mission and commitment to openness in research and engagement with collaborators.

What do you consider most promising in the era of big data?

Big data offers us the opportunity to solve real-world problems with evidence-based information. If we think about this in current terms, as the healthcare community copes with the Covid pandemic, medical researchers can comb through thousands of health records to try to identify useful correlations between treatments, outcomes and long term impact on our health.

How can an organization stay relevant five years from now?

The best ways an organization can stay relevant is by investing in their employees, being nimble and flexible, encouraging and rewarding innovation, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, understanding and analyzing trends and staying true to the core mission.

What app would be hard for you to live without?

This is a tough question, I love all my apps. If I could only have one, it would have to be OverDrive. I love to read and the limitations on outside activities due to Covid has enabled me to read more books.

If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and why?

Amelia Earhart. She was definitely a rule breaker becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic and the first person ever to fly solo from Hawaii to the US. She was truly a trailblazer. I would love to be able to solve the mystery of her disappearance which remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries.
